Nick Meakin at Maxi Jazz
MAXI JAZZ is an icon of British dance culture. His name resonates class and his music has inspired many clubber s to nights of dancing bliss.
Surely then, witnessing the self-proclaimed G.O.D. (Grand Oral Disseminator) playing a night at World Headquarters would be a night to remember. Sadly not. It was just all too normal. Maxi himself was picture of the classic performer; fashionable flat-cap, Pringle jumper, earphones on at an angle, but image for once wasn’t everything. His set could be best described as a hybrid of house and hip-hop.
There were a few tunes but it was all just too standard and mainstream. Beyoncé followed Jurassic 5, yet surprisingly no Dido remixes! WHQ’s originality lies in its intimate nature, dancing just yards away from a musical legend adds significantly to the experience, but with the dance floor colonized by sweating dance kids from early on most of the crowd were pushed to the sides. None of this would’ve mattered though if Maxi had given the crowd exactly what they wanted. One Faithless track would’ve sufficed, a bit of MCing would’ve really made the evening. It was a decent night, and a decent set, but not quite what you expect from the man who bought the world ‘Insomnia’ and ‘We Come One’.
